A session usually lasts 50 minutes, although longer sessions might be considered useful. I recommend weekly sessions. Between sessions, clients are encouraged to think about and process what was discussed. At times, you may be asked to do something specific outside of the therapy sessions, such as reading a relevant book or keeping records. For the therapy to "work," you must be an active participant, both during and between the therapy sessions.
A number of benefits are available from participating. Often it is helpful just to know that someone is listening and understands. Counseling can provide a fresh perspective on a difficult problem or point you in the direction of a solution. The benefits you obtain from counseling depend on how well you use the process and put into practice what you learn. Often the real benefit of counseling is when we overcome fears of letting go of misconceptions so new patterns can emerge.
We can talk about occassional sessions via on-line video. You would need to have Vsee downloaded on your computer, as this is a secure site (Skype is not secured). You can see more about my social media policy here.
I am a provider in the CareFirst (Illinois only), Aetna, Optum, UBH, and Cigna Behavioral Health Networks (for clients in Illinois and DC). I also offer a sliding scale in lieu of working with insurance.
My standard fee for a one-hour session is $125. As mentioned above, I do offer a sliding scale that we can negotiate if necessary. As much as possible, I maintain a personal commitment that financial restrictions not be a significant barrier to quality mental health services and supports.
